PB: Zooey Deschanel Rahne PB: Cynthia Nixon
IC Name: Bethesda Hope Wagner Codename: Possum (spelled like that, without the 'o') Age: 22. March 4th, 2011. Family: Mother: Rahne Wagner, Father: Kurt Wagner, Grandmother: Mystique, Grandfather: Azazel, Aunt: Bridget Shane (who she's never met)
Abilities / Skills: Bethesda's mutation is mostly physical. She has two fingers with an opposable thumb on each hand and only two toes on each foot with a third toe-like projection on her heel. She also has pointed teeth and ears, and a prehensile tail. Unfortunately, she is neither blue nor furry like her father, so her tail is naked, and so a bit odd looking. While her tail is strong enough to fully support her body weight, it is not as strong as her father's. She has a bone structure which makes her very flexible. Bethesda also inherited her father's ability to teleport by entering an alternate dimension briefly and reappearing in a desired location. She possesses a limited "spatial awareness" which stops her from teleporting into solid objects, but this ability diminishes the farther the distance she teleports. As well as adding to the likelihood of her being splinched, teleporting large distances greatly fatigues her. The furthest she will generally bamf is only one mile, though she has been known to teleport farther in emergency situations.
Personality: Bethesda has always been shy, but she's getting more outgoing as she gets older. She prefers talking to people one-on-one, as in groups she has difficulty deciding when to jump in with her opinion. She stutters when nervous.
She was raised to respect all people, and she is very forgiving. She feels guilty not forgiving people, so anyone who asks for her forgiveness will get it. She also believes in treating animals as near-equals to humans. As a child, she read that kosher animals are killed in more humane ways than factory farm animals, so she only eats meat that is certified kosher, much to the confusion of her parents. She's a practicing Catholic, so eating kosher meat is pretty abnormal. Her mother is upset that she chose Catholicism over Presbyterianism, though she doesn't bring it up often.
She thinks lobster smells like heaven, though she wouldn't eat it even if she weren't allergic just because they always seem so cramped in those little water tanks. Her first job was as a Starbucks barista, and she blames her caffeine addiction on that. She drinks medium blends throughout the day, as they have more caffeine than dark roast coffee. However, her first drink of the day is usually espresso-based, as the strong coffee smell wakes her up faster than caffeine. If she goes without caffeine for even a short length of time, she gets grouchy and irritable.
She has a fear of paraplegics, which she feels like a horrible person about.
When going out, Bethesda has a tendency to tuck her tail under her shirt. She's proud of her mutancy, but she would rather avoid any possible trouble it may cause. She doesn't cover her hands, however, because she thinks they're less noticeable than her tail.
Bethesda is patient with people, but she isn't a patient person. She hates waiting on line, or for things to come in the mail.
Bethesda is quiet, but she does her best to appear friendly. She most always has a smile on her face. She enjoys reading, and can be seen with her head in a book all over the school. She's not sporty, but she does like to keep active. She walks wherever she can, only bamfing in emergency, or taking the subway or public transportation for very long distances.
She's a bit quirky in that she talks to animals an inanimate objects. She says 'hi' to most any animal she passes, and tries to ask them about their day when she's not in a hurry. If she bumps into a table, she will apologize to it. She knows it's weird, but she feels mean if she doesn't do it.
History: On paper, Rahne Sinclair and Kurt Wagner may not appear to be compatible. Rahne's adoptive mother was killed by Kurt's biological mother. Rahne's father was a priest, while Kurt's father was a demon. Rahne is a devout Presbyterian, and Kurt is a devout Catholic. However, they hit it off after they joined a reformed Excalibur. They were friends first, but Rahne was impressed with Kurt's manner and charm, and they eventually began seeing one another seriously, in between all the thrilling heroics in the UK. They married in early in 2010, and they welcomed their first child the following year.
Both parents were a bit surprised when Bethesda was born as she wasn't blue, and they had thought blueness was a dominant trait. Bethesda was an ugly baby, but Rahne and Kurt were besotted with her.
Instead of staying in the UK, they decided to retire from the superhero life and settle down in New York. However, where exactly to settle was something of a bone of contention between them. Rahne had her heart set on District X in the city, but Kurt wanted to raise his daughter in Salem Center. Eventually, the rural beauty of Salem Center won out, and the couple bought a farm house.
Despite living in a farm house, they weren't farmers. Rahne worked for a private detective, and Kurt stayed at home with Bethesda. They did, however, have enough land to adopt a few animals. They have three hens, four Dobermans, and one cat. The dogs are siblings, and they all suffer from narcolepsy. As such, Bethesda is very good at not making her dogs too excited, because then they'd pass out asleep.
Bethesda has always gotten along best with her father. He is patient and understanding, while Rahne is more likely to snap first and apologize later. They don't hate each other at all, they just argued a lot when Bethesda was younger.
Bethesda wishes there was real human-mutant equality, if only because then she'd be able to buy underwear and trousers with tail holes already in them. She'd also like to be able to get a teaching job without being discriminated against because of her physical mutation. She doesn't believe mutants are superior to humans, as everyone is equal in gods eyes.
It was obvious Bethesda was a mutant before the doctor who delivered her even smacked her bottom. With the pointed ears, tridactyl hands and feet, and the prehensile tail, there was no doubt as to her mutancy. Her teleportation ability first manifested when she was eleven. She was roughhousing with some neighborhood kids, and a boy was chasing her. He was particularly cute, and Bethesda was more watching him than where she was going. She almost ran into a tree, but she turned her head just in time. With a loud BAMF, she was suddenly in her kitchen. Her parents didn't send her to The Academy until she was fourteen. They wanted her to attend a normal public school first, so she could experience both mutant-heavy and human-heavy learning environs.
Bethesda enjoyed her time at the Academy, although at first it was hard being away from old schoolmates and not sleeping in her own bed. She kept her head down, mostly, and while she had friends, she wasn't exactly outgoing enough to be popular. She was a New Mutant for two years before graduation.
After graduating, Bethesda attended college with the hopes of becoming a journalist. However, it soon became apparent to Bethesda that she was horrible at interviewing people older than her. She was fine with kids and most people her own age, but she would get choked up speaking to people she viewed as her superiors.
It was her mother who suggested teaching. Bethesda was against it at first, as she's not exactly a rocket scientist, but since she didn't want to leave school, she agreed to take a few education classes. It wasn't a terrible fit, and she decided to continue on that path, receiving a BS in Adolescence/Middle Childhood Education in English. She is currently trying to earn her Masters in Adolescence Urban Education in English. She was student teaching at a public school, but it was closed due to low attendance and high gang violence. Because her coursework requires her to be student teaching, she decided to head back to the Academy, to assist with English studies.
Team: None; she's too busy with school and being a teacher's assistant to do any heroing.
